"Focus on the future. Secure funds and experience for a lifelong career. Build your house on solid ground, all else is sinking sand."
Former Judge Ian Richards

Courtroom Visit

Courtrooms are public spaces. Public participation is essential to the judicial process. The public has a right to see and hear what is happening. Judge Ian Richards urges everyone to attend at least one court session. Watch the constitution in action and protect it by bring some citizen-sunshine into the courtroom.

During my two visits to the Fort Lauderdale Courthouse, I had the opportunity to observe the sequence of a trial here in the United States. Since I had never experienced or read about this process before, it was enlightening. Listening to two attorneys, each trying to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt under the scrutiny of Judge Ian Richards showed me how interesting the legal system truly is.

I observed that the responsibility of a Judge involves presiding over trials, making sure rules are followed, that the rights of both parties are safeguarded, and to provide a reasonable sentence depending on whether the defendant was proved guilty or not. The Judge exercises this responsibility by keeping order in the court and dismissing certain statements that would otherwise flaw the legal process in the court.

Sitting in on a trial is something I would recommend everyone participate in because of the eye opening knowledge gained, and it's a great way to exercise one of our constitutional rights. Thank Judge Ian Richards for providing me with this opportunity.

My experience in Judge Ian Richards' courtroom was enlightening and educating. Before I visited his courtroom, I did not have the best idea on what career path I wanted to take. Now, I feel that I have an idea on what career I may want to pursue after high school. My experience there has also revealed the reality of a jury selection and trial. The media tends to cloud the reality of these things to make shows more interesting, but the visit gave me some insight on the court system in its most genuine form.

My experience in Judge Ian Richards' courtroom was so much more interesting than what I thought it would be. The cases that are publicized are very exciting and keep me on my toes. Even before I arrive, I am enthusiastic because I don't know what kind of case will be presented that day. Since each case is different, the outcomes are different, which makes the experience more valuable. It's almost like reading a great book or watching a movie.
